By far the most popular post on this blog (I’ll be honest, it’s the one that brings in almost all of the traffic) was the post I did on great places to buy fabric online. I got dozens of responses from readers about other online sites they loved and felt should be included, so I decided to revisit the topic and post some of the reader favorites that I didn’t originally include on my rather limited list. If there are other sites that you think should make this newer list, let me know and I’ll add them! And here they are, in no particular order.
UPDATE: I do appreciate all the feedback, but many of the sites people suggest were covered in my original post. Please look there, too: 30 Great Places to Buy Fabric Online. Also, please keep the comments and suggestions civil. There’s no need to get snobby/mean!
- Hawthorne Threads: Many people commented on my original post that they couldn’t believe I hadn’t included this site on my list. After checking it out, I can’t believe I didn’t either! They have an amazing selection of fabrics and offer flat rate shipping. Thanks for the heads up!
- TwentyOne7: This site, formerly Fabric Alley, has updated their collections and is now carrying a great assortment of high-end fabrics.
- Thousands of Bolts: Quilters are sure to love this site! I’m a big fan of how they have the fabrics organized by color, which makes it easy to find something that will coordinate with any project.
- Harts Fabric: Harts carries a great collection of designer fabrics (think Marc Jacobs, Missoni) so if you’re in the market for some fancy threads, this site might be one of your best bets.
- The Fabric Co.: I am pretty sure that this site is geared towards interior designers, but even us amateurs could probably find a few heavy-duty fabrics worth making into pillows or slipcovers.
- Shabby Fabrics: If pretty, girly fabrics are your thing, you will think you have died and gone to heaven with this online retailer. They also have a good assortment of seasonal and quilt-worthy patterns as well.
- True Up: This site isn’t a place to buy fabric so much as a blog that you shouldn’t buy fabric without first consulting. You’ll find updates on sales and posts about the latest awesome fabrics.
- Crafty Mamas: A bit confusing to navigate (that sidebar is NUTS), this site nonetheless is a super awesome place to find fun and youthful prints that the little ones, or let’s be honest, you, will adore.
- Jubilee Fabric: I have to admit that a lot of what this store carries is not so much my style, but for those who quilt or who appreciate more rustic-looking fabrics, their selection is pretty great.
- Connecting Threads: This site is pretty darn cool! Not only do they have a great selection, they also offer free shipping over $50 and no-hassle returns. You can’t beat that.
- Fabric Hound: They carry some really interesting fabrics on Fabric Hound, including a number of very cute Japanese imports. Love the cute buttons and iron ons as well.
- Crafty Planet: They’ve got a lot of the big names in fabric here, like Amy Butler, Kokka, and Alexander Henry, as well as a pretty solid selection of other prints as well.
- The Fabric Fairy: There are a whole lot of great fabrics to be found here, including those from big designers and a number that are perfect for kids. Where else are you going to get fabric with otters snuggling?
- Marshall Dry Goods Co: Check out this online store if you’re looking for some quilting basics!
- Delta Patchwork: There’s a little something for everyone at this online store. From high-end designers to basic solids to strange prints of sea turtles, they’ve got it. I should note that I am crazy about all of those Melody Miller fabrics they carry. So amazing.
- Pink Castle Fabrics: Not only can you buy fabric by the yard on this Etsy shop, but you can also get packs of pre-matched smaller squares that are perfect for quilting.
- Spoonflower: This is another site that I can’t believe I didn’t include originally. You can make your own fabric. Yes, that’s right. It’s custom printed and it’s so amazing. I really, really want to try this.
- Nature’s Fabrics: Nature’s Fabrics is another place to check with for organic fabrics. They’ve got bamboo, cotton, hemp, and wool.
- Aspen Fabrics: This adorable Etsy shop has a great selection of pattern and fabrics as well as some other cute things like stationary and trims.
- Calico Corners: There are a number of really interesting prints on here, though I would say most are for upholstery. If you don’t want to do the work yourself, you can also order bedding and furniture in the pattern of your choice.
- Emma One Sock: Here you’ll find a somewhat strange assortment of fabrics (lurex anyone?) but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, I swear!
- Down Shadow Lane: This Etsy store carries a pretty impressive collection of bold and beautiful prints (and some really, really cute ones too).
- Fabric Guru: There are lots of fabrics to choose from on Fabric Guru but the real bonus may be that they charge only a flat rate of $5 for shipping no matter how much fabric you order.
- eQuilter.com: As the name might lead you to believe, this site caters to quilters, though anyone working on a sewing project can probably find a thing or two they wouldn’t mind having.
- Payless Fabric: Just like Payless Shoes, Payless Fabric offers budget-friendly prices on many fabrics. They also carry some big names, too, if that’s what you’re looking for.
- Beverly’s: If you’re looking for cute on a budget, be sure to check out this site. They offer a selection of fabrics at a substantial discount every day.
- Tonic Living: On Tonic Living, the prints may be retro-inspired, but they still feel fresh and exciting. There are a few chevrons on there that I really feel like I need.
- J & O Fabrics: J & O is another great place to look for fabric basics. They carry just about everything and offer free shipping over $75.
- Warm Biscuit: One of the coolest things you can get on Warm Biscuit are vintage and retro fabrics! I’m particularly fond of this one.
- Retro Age Vintage Fabrics: They don’t lie when they say they carry retro fabrics. Some are impossibly cheesy, but many more are sooo cool you’ll just have to have them. I should note that it’s an Australian shop, so prices and shipping may be a concern for American buyers.
- Sew Modern: There are so many bold and beautiful prints on this site, it makes me want to go on a fabric shopping spree. I’ll refrain, but you shouldn’t! Good for embroidery fans (like me) as well.
- Bobbin’s Nest: Not only can you get super cute fabrics here, but they also sell supplies for knitting, crocheting, and quilting!
- Pins & Needles: You’ll find just about every amazing designer fabric you could want on this site, from Liberty of London to Heather Ross.
- Monaluna: For those who appreciate eco-conscious fabrics but still want to be stylish, you can’t do much better than this site. I desperately want to make a dress out of one of the blossoms pattern.
- FinnStyle: It’s a smorgasboard of Marimekko, Artek, and other Finnish brands! Some at serious discounts.

Where on earth did the very bottom fabric on the stack come from? I hunted all of these sites for something similar and found nothing.
You know, I have no idea who the designer of that fabric is as it was a remnant when I bought it. I got it from a local place called The Needle Shop which I mentioned in my previous fabric post. I am great big fan and client of EmmaOneSock and it really doesn’t belong in this list of fabric shops. It is definitely NOT a quilting fabric shop. It’s for us sewists so do not quilt at all but only sew high-end, couture-style garments. The lurex you mention I am sure runs in the $20+ a yard range and isn’t dance costume fabric, but was made for a well-known fashion designer and used for evening wear.
I’m a little confused by this comment. This isn’t a list of quilting fabric shops. It’s a list of places to buy fabric online, as the title of the post would tell you. And unless you’re the owner of this shop, I will not be removing that store from this list. This post generates thousands of links for the stores listed on it each week, so even if you think it’s beneath you, I assure you that the owners of the shop don’t mind appearing among a list of “low-end” fabric shops (many of whom also sell fabrics that are in the $20+ a yard range, FYI).

A couple of little websites I love is Green Fairy Fabrics, missouriquilts has a daily deal, and stitches and Giggles also a daily deal! Not big fabric places but great things and great prices!
I’m surprised not to see Purlsoho.com they have a huge selection of gorgeous, quality cottons in Manhattan. Much bigger selection than Pins n Needles in my opinion, and easier to get to. They are near most of the subways. Important thing in NYC when buying lots of fabric.

My favorite, like several people have commented, is fabric.com. They most always have what I’m looking for, and I ALWAYS spend more than $35, so I take advantage of the free shipping. Another website I use is warehousefabricsinc.com, which is a store about 45 minutes away from my house. But it is much easier for me to order from them online than to drive over there. One suggestion I would like to make on the list: it would be nice to know what type of fabrics each website sold. I don’t quilt, I make draperies, pillows, bedding, things like that, so the quilting materials just aren’t something I generally look at. And unfortunately, I don’t always have a lot of time to search each individual website to see. I’m sure there are also people on here who only would use quilting type fabrics and would benefit from it also. But thanks anyway! Eventually I will get through the entire list!

I order fabric from Connecting Treads. The quality of the fabric was awful. The print was a designer print but reprinted on very low quality fabric with Connecting Treads printed in the salvage. Just thought you might want to know. Thanks

The best place I’ve found to buy fabric online for sewing for my grandchildren is SewBaby. LOVE their quality, selection, service and fast response. They are simply wonderful and cut the fabric so nicely that the edges are almost always without waste and don’t need trimming. They have an excellent selection of knits and fleece too!
This place has amazing variety, colors/themes and quality!! I’ve mot seen better prices w the exception of Wal-Mart…but their quality doesn’t compare! Also retail me not always has coupons for them…ie free shipping…30% off orders of $35 or more etc. It’s a great site!!! I only order from here. But now that I’ve found your list ill check them out too!!

Quick shipping, too. Very nice selection which includes hard to find novelty prints. Lisa started as my “go to” gal for sock monkey print. It was such a great experience, I just keep going back for more!

i am not an US resident so i am seeking for the best , cheapest site of those above to buy from middle east , also i am seeking for the one site that is specialist in fabrics for sewing clothes like satin , cotton , lace not for quilting , here in egypt quilting stores are different from clothes fabrics stores , so it is overwhelming for me to go through all th 35 choices that you mention , i want a help with those two conditions ( 1- fabrics for clothes , 2- cheapest shipping internationally ) … any suggestions ?

I’m new to this blog, but not new to sewing and crafts. In fact, I’ve been sewing clothes and home decor for 40 years! What I cannot grasp is how women purchase fabrics online without having the opportunity to feel the fabrics. That’s why I’ve always gone to fabric shops locally and in nearby Philadelphia’s “fabric row” in South Philadelphia, where prices are much lower. Could someone please help me understand how buying online would suffice? It certainly would be easier!!

A site I would recommend is https://www.quiltedtwins.com. They sell only 100% cotton for quilters. The prices are half of what most stores charge, they have by the yard, wide backings & the bundles (1/2 yd & 1 yd & FQ) are color coordinated so I don’t have to match colors on my computer & color coordinating is my big downfall . I’m not a quilter, Just bags, totes, etc., all with cotton & they stand up well for wear.
